Dilansir dari Genius, Jumat (19/4/2024), beberapa berspekulasi bahwa arti lagu ini bercerita tentang Taylor Swift yang jatuh cinta dengan Travis Kelce, pacar terbarunya. Sementara, sebagian lagi berpikir bahwa pelantun “Lover” itu tengah berjuang melawan depresinya setelah berpisah dari Joe Alwyn.

Namun asumsi bahwa lagu Joe Alwyn lebih kuat, mengingat dalam pidatonya untuk Grammy, Taylor menyebut bahwa album ini telah disiapkannya selama dua tahun terakhir. Saat itu merupakan tahap patah hati dalam hidup Taylor dan dia belum dekat dengan Travis.
